It was during the Second Boer War of 1899-1902, that the small South African town of Mafeking witnessed one of the most famous events of the conflict. 5,000 Boers surrounded the British garrison led by Robert Baden-Powell – later the founder of the Scouting movement. The ensuing siege lasted a staggering 217 days, until reinforcements came to relieve the resolute soldiers.To commemorate this epic event which gripped the Empire and created scenes of jubilation in the streets of Britain, Danbury Mint is proud to present this exclusive hand-painted sculpture.This collection includes:
- A remarkably detailed and stunningly realistic sculpture of a British soldier, marching towards Mafeking to relieve the struggling garrison.
- A genuine Old-Head Victorian silver shilling and exclusive commemorative medal, featuring the words of Colonel Robert Baden-Powell who commanded the Mafeking garrison and recalled that, “The end of the Siege has in itself been a grand refreshment to me, it was a long strain of anxiety.”
