The trusty shilling has been a part of our nation’s history for over 500 years. First minted in the 16th century, the sturdy silver coins were known as ‘testoons’, but by the middle of the century the name ‘shilling’ had become commonplace. Convenient in size and value, the shilling quickly became one of the popular workhorses of the nation’s coinage. When Decimal Day arrived in 1971, around 1000 million shillings were in circulation.
Now, you can uncover 150 years of the shilling’s history with this fascinating collection, which charts the coin’s evolution from the Great Recoinage of George III’s reign to the pre-decimal days of Elizabeth II’s early years. The fourteen coins in this collection each showcase a different portrait and reverse. As you build the collection, you will see the talents of successive Royal Mint engravers, like Benedetto Pistrucci and William Wyon, reflected in the intricate designs the coins bear.
To show these exceptional coins at their best, sparkling crystal panels encase each one, creating a series of miniature framed artworks. Each panel features bevelled edges to enhance the coin’s presentation. When gathered together, the complete collection is truly impressive!
The panels are housed in a handsome display case featuring a lock and key and a removable tray. With a glass top for easy viewing this Chest is the perfect way to protect and display your impressive collection! You will also receive a Certificate of Authenticity. Both are at no extra charge.
