In 1743, Admiral George Anson took a rare opportunity to capture a Spanish treasure ship returning to the Philippines. The ship was found to be carrying 34.5 tonnes of silver, much of it coins stamped with ‘Lima’, which was taken to the Royal Mint to be turned into British coins. Between 1745 and 1746, ‘LIMA’ was struck under the king’s portrait on all silver coins as a tribute to Anson and a celebration of his victory.
You can own three of these magnificent coins with this stunning collection. It includes a silver half crown, shilling and sixpence, all from 1745-1746 and all stamped with the word ‘LIMA’. The coins share the same design on the obverse and reverse; the obverse features the older portrait of George II and the reverse shows four crowned shields bearing the coat of arms Scotland and England, Ireland, France, and the Duchy of Brunswick and Luneburg.
The collection comes with a deluxe wooden Display Chest, complete with lock and key, and a Certificate of Authenticity.
