To celebrate the life of this special little coin, Danbury Mint is proud to be able to offer to our collectors a stunning collection of 37 halfpennies – one from each year of issue from 1930 until Decimalisation.
Covering four decades, the collection spans the reigns of three different monarchs – George V, George VI and Elizabeth II – and encompasses some of the most important events in modern British history. While these coins were in circulation, the Second World War was fought, the NHS was born, DNA was discovered, and Concorde made its maiden flight.
It was also during these four decades that the reverse design of the halfpenny was changed significantly for the first time since 1672. For just over 260 years until the death of George V in 1936, Britannia sat on the halfpenny’s reverse, proudly brandishing her spear (later a trident), helmet atop her head and shield at her side. But, with the planned accession of King Edward VIII, a new design was commissioned, which was used when George VI came to the throne. It featured the magnificent Golden Hinde, the ship on which Francis Drake circumnavigated the world in the late 16th century.
