80 years ago, at the Battle of El Alamein, two great military leaders met. One was Erwin Rommel, the ‘Desert Fox’, commander of the Afrika Korps. The other was Bernard Montgomery, newly appointed commander of the Eighth Army. Despite Rommel’s mastery of desert warfare, Montgomery’s careful calculation and ability to inspire his troops brought him victory. The triumph gave a much-needed boost to British morale and began a new phase of the war which would ultimately see the Allies victorious. As a tribute to the ‘Desert Rats’ who turned the tide of the war, Danbury Mint is proud to present…The Turning of the Tide.

  • Our skilled craftsmen have masterfully sculpted a soldier of the Eighth Army in combat. As the perfect finishing touch, the entire sculpture has been hand-painted.
  • The sculpture is set against a glass backdrop etched with an image of British soldiers advancing under fire, below the stirring words of Winston Churchill: “Before Alamein we never had a victory. After Alamein we never had a defeat!”.
  • A genuine silver sixpence from 1942 – the year of the Battle of El Alamein – and an exclusive commemorative medal bearing Montgomery’s personal address to his troops on the reverse are set within a specially-crafted rectangular wooden base.
