On 4th November 1922, a set of ancient stone steps were found in the Valley of the Kings in Egypt. Three weeks later, archaeologist Howard Carter and his sponsor Lord Carnarvon made their way carefully down the steps and along a tunnel to an undisturbed doorway. What the pair had discovered was one of the greatest archaeological finds the world had ever seen, the undisturbed tomb of the mysterious Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun, housing thousands of objects – jewellery, chariots, statues, clothes – which had lain hidden for 3,000 years. Designed by Royal Mint designer Lucy Clancy, the stunning design takes its inspiration from the most famous artefacts found within the tomb: the gold burial mask of Tutankhamun. In a fitting tribute to such an incredible work of art, this crown is minted in 92.5% silver and has been struck to proof quality – the highest calibre of strike in the coin-collecting world. Using special polished dies, the coins have been individually struck at least twice to give them an unparalleled crispness of design. They have more detail, clearer relief, and a finer, smoother surface than coins struck to normal standards.
