In 1862, with precious metals scarce due to hoarding during the Civil War, the federal government authorised the use of paper money in denominations of less than a dollar. The use of fractional currency continued into the mid-1870s, when almost all notes were redeemed and destroyed; less than one percent remain — still legal tender today!
All six denominations are represented in this collection, from 3 to 50 cents, including the only 15-cent denomination ever issued in U.S. government monetary history. They are captivating for their outstanding beauty and unique features — from intricate designs, created by highly skilled artisans of the era, to a rich variety of inks and papers.
Remarkably, each note in this collection is preserved in gently circulated condition and is protectively encapsulated so one can examine every detail on both front and back.
